Hetain Patel

I thoroughly enjoyed hetain Patels lecture I thought it was interesting and relevant how he introduced his culture into his artwork which is very smilar to what we are doing on our project and it is also interesting how he has used traditional indian materials such as Mehndi and also Kanku Pigment "The artist marks himself not on the forehead but instead emblazons the rich red colour more overtly across his chest. He marks himself repeatedly and with purpose. Though the mark making takes place within Indian time and with Indian pigment, the trace that remains is the English St George’s cross. As with all of his works this is not intended as a statement but rather a question" This lecture has inspired me to take a look into my cultural traditions and learn more than i already know are there still traditions that we have even though my parents parent and granparents moved to England years ago? are we more westernised? or do we still embrace our culture?

Our Poster

So today we unveiled our Poster at Hilton house our studio space for Unit X which it situated at the Northern Quarter of manchester city centre. We initially wanted to do a layered poster but decided it didn't work out the way that we all thought because you weren't able to see the layers underneath so we separated out each section and used them as separate posters. The film and media students also took individual pictures of us holding the symbols of our own cultures currency symbols and also Niamh made a separate poster for Fashian and Lucy did for textiles. I thought our posters turned out well and i like the fact that we used different materials and ways to show and embrace our subjects. Im stilll not quite sure how im going to take this topic further but I am hoping to Branch out onto cultures as I have exciting opportunities with in my family to show and portray my own culture!

Trends Forecasting

My Notes from the Trend Forecasting Lecture I thought this Lecture was very interesting as I've learnt things I hadn't learnt before such as micro trends and macro trends I think it was good for me to go to this lecture as a textiles student and learn more about the fashion world and more about what the fashion students learn about. It was also interesting to learn about the way the highstreet stores use the big brands and fashion to create cheaper and more affordable prices and how companies such as Primark work.

Poster in the making

We'd previously discussed that we'd be doing our poster on currency and possibly branch out onto different cultures seeing as our group has a diverse range of cultures such as Pakistani (me) Iranian, Chinese, Irish and English. So we'd decided that we were gona make a layered poster with each section layered ontop of one another made out of different matrerials and different sections would have different motifs such as the different money symbols from around the world, notes, coins. We used organza as a layer because its a see-through fabric we also used tracing paper with a screen shot of falling coins that Howard and Samira (filmand media students) put together also the top layer acetate with 175 drawn onto it and then a flat surface of paper which we'd stuck down notes onto.

Twitter Workshop

Today we had a quick Twitter workshop to show us the ropes and setup our own hastag. I am already a twitter user but I think this was a useful workshop as I've learnt about websites such as ifttt.com that can help us use the social networking sites quicker as the posts get pinned on to your other accounts. We made a hashtag for our projectg as #revoltculture but I dont think we would be using twitter as much as we do facebook as we fing on facebook we can have better conversation and is also similar to a blog.

UNIT X

Today was the first day of our new project Unit X. Unit X has been based around the number 175 and the school of Art. We are also collaborating with to other subjects Film and media and Fashion there are £ film and media students (Howard, Samira, Charlotte) 2 fashion students (tina, Niamh) and 3 Textile students (me, Jess, Lucy) We started of the project by looking at random facts that included the number 175. As a group we came up with many ideas and finaly decided on currency from around the world eg. £175.00=$271.02 we'd thought this was a good idea because we thought we could branch of many other ideas such as culture. we were all from different cultures in our group and thought it would be interesting if we brought parts of our culture into our work. I think this is a good idea because it will teach me things about other people and cultures and could possible help me learn things about my own culture.
