Today we had a lecture by a textiles tutor. This was very interesting for me as you could see the two different job roles Lynn has, as a textiles teacher at Manchester Metropolitan University but then also working with the community holding workshops and creating work with companies.
Lynn spoke about many different artist that have had influenced her work and quilt making. One main inspiration that stood out to me was about Bengal women working on quilts made out of old saris together as a collaboration. Lynn talked about these beautiful quilts that looked like they were made for decoration used for domestic use such as throws and carpets. What really caught my attention was when she said the featured patterns such as Paisley and mandalas as these are patterns that have heavily influenced my work in the past.
Lynn also talked about a workshop that caught my interest she did with two primary schools in burnley one of which was mainly Asian populated and the other being from a white background. They made a tree of life that had their names stitched into it in either English or Bengali and there was a tree for each school. I think this was a great workshop to do with young children as it helps them to interact with people from other schools and also a good way to learn about other cultures and become open minded from an early age especially in today's multicultural society. The children also gained a new skill to be able to write their name in another language.
Her are a few images of Lynn's own work
